Get to know the Museum of Wine Culture

Located in the town of Briones, the museum belongs to the Vivanco Foundation. This is one of the most renowned Riojan winemaker surnames. In its 4,000 m², it proposes a journey back in time to discover the importance of wine throughout the centuries.

In it you can visit several rooms in which all the secrets related to winemaking are discovered. We take a brief tour of them.

Room 1

Under the title Born, grow, mature  proposes a journey through the history of wine. It shows in a didactic way how the first wines originated. In addition, it explains the types of land for growing vines in different parts of the world and how wine is grown and made in La Rioja.

We will also take a tour through technological history, through the advances that have directly affected the production of this drink. Among the aspects that you will learn in this room are how to go from must to wine or why they have such different flavors if they come from the same place.

In this room, as in all those of the Museum of Wine Culture, there are interactive media. Here you can watch videos or listen to audio descriptions that will make your visit even more enjoyable.

Room 2

It is the room of essences, because they say that a good wine must smell good. And for this it must have had a good preservation process. In this room you can see how the transport of wine has evolved so that it does not lose its original essence.

Although what we know today are glass bottles with a cork stopper, to get there there was a convoluted process of practices with other materials. For this reason, this room displays different containers : barrels, bottles or corks. An interesting tour that takes us to learn more about the wine conservation process.

Many believe that the largest process takes place in the winery. But until it reaches it, the wine goes through certain processes, such as fermentation and maceration. In this room you will learn about all the rest processes, for example, the racking, clarified and filtered, among others.

You will also live the experience of a wine tasting, as well as an exhibition of young and barrel-aged wines. And finally, it shows us a route through the evolution in the transport and marketing of wine, as well as a tour of the oldest presses used to extract juice from grapes.

Room 4

Its name already says it all: Wine, art and symbol . It shows us the enormous influence of wine in the life of man. It has been so great that it has even materialized in works of art of all kinds.

In this room you will see an archeology exhibition with pieces from different periods. They show the relationship that this liquid has had with religious acts in ancient civilizations. But you will also see how vintage scenes or the pleasure of drinking wine have been the inspiration of renowned artists.

What is the first thing you need to drink a glass of wine? A corkscrew! Here is a wide variety of all of them. You will be surprised by the evolution that this simple device has undergone over time.
