Inspired by well-known artists such as the composer Joaquín Rodrigo, the gardens of the Palacio de Aranjuez are of different styles, but beautiful at any time. So much so, that they were the definitive element for Aranjuez to be declared a World Heritage Cultural Landscape in 2001.

Its creation dates back to the 16th century, however, it was not until the 18th century when the kings of Spain began to improve the gardens with constant renovations and works. Thanks to this, today we can enjoy a unique place in the world. Let’s get to know one by one the corners that we can enjoy in this space.

Prince’s garden

It is the largest garden, with a perimeter of 7 kilometers and 150 hectares in size. Bathed by the waters of the Tagus, it was created in the 18th century at the whim of the then Prince of Asturias, who would later become King Carlos IV.

A place characterized by its great variety of plants, perfect for strolling for hours. But to its natural beauty we must add statues and fountains made with Carrara marble, such as those of Narcissus, Apollo or Neptune. And if there is a special place, it is the small lake where the Chinese pavilion and the temple are located.

There is much more to this garden than the jetty. Here you will find the Museum of the Royal Barges. They are boats that the royal family used to walk along the river and that will surprise you with their size and beauty La Casa del Labrador is another of its most beautiful places.

For being one of the most special gardens of the Palace of Aranjuez, as well as one of the most beautiful and recognized, you can take guided tours in which they will explain everything you need about the history and creation of this place.

Another of the most emblematic places of the gardens of Aranjuez is the Garden of the Island. It is a beautiful Renaissance garden embraced by the Tagus River.  It is older than the Garden of the Prince, since it was built in the 16th century by order of Felipe II, although it was expanded and modified in later centuries.

It is an oasis of wide avenues and beautiful flowerbeds where you will find such special corners as the Castañuelas waterfall. And you can also stroll among countless fountains and sculptures that represent mythological scenes and figures. The Clock Fountain, Hercules Fountain, Bacchus Fountain and Neptune Fountain stand out.

Guided tours are also made in this part of the gardens of the Palace of Aranjuez, although only on weekends and holidays. However, if there are groups who wish to go, they can also request a guided tour in advance at another time or day of the week.

Although it is the last on the list, the truth is that this garden is the first that we will find when entering Aranjuez. Let’s say it is something like the reception to a beautiful natural and architectural enclave that will fascinate you, since it is in front of the east facade of the palace.

Just seeing this garden will allow you to get an idea of what awaits you in Aranjuez. Inside you can see three beautiful sources, that of Hercules and Before, that of Ceres and the source of the Nereids.

We have toured three of the historic gardens of Aranjuez, but there are more. On one side of the palace and closed to the public is the King’s Garden. And a little further away we find a small but charming garden, that of Isabel II.
