What to see and do on the island of La Palma ?

Known as “the beautiful island” for its incredible landscapes that include volcanoes, forests and beaches, the island of La Palma is one of the best places in the world to observe the stars and the stars.

In addition, hiking fans find here a thousand kilometers of signposted routes to enjoy nature without problems. Among the activities and attractions of the island of La Palma we highlight:

1. Caldera de Taburiente

This national park is one of the island’s most precious natural jewels, with an impressive setting that will take your breath away. The area was formed by volcanic eruptions, the force of water, and rock displacements from nearby mountains.

You can choose any of its signposted trails to skirt it or go to its center. The caldera is no less than 8 kilometers in diameter and on one of the routes you will find beautiful corners such as the Brecitos viewpoint, the Colores waterfall and the Las Angustias ravine.

2. Los Tilos Forest

The most abundant trees here are those of laurel forest. As soon as you enter this forest you will not be able to believe your eyes. An almost fantasy place, with an intense green and trees of a species that has managed to survive since tertiary times.

Undoubtedly, an enchanted place where you will feel almost like in a story and that you can walk through several perfectly marked trails of varying difficulty.

3. Santa Cruz de la Palma

We leave the natural life for a moment to know the capital of the island of La Palma, with its calm rhythm. It has a beautiful historical-artistic complex, which combines the maritime with the colonial.

Take a walk along Avenida Marítima, with its flower-covered balconies. Then visit the Renaissance-style Plaza España that includes the town hall, the Salvador church and the Monteverde, Pereyra and Lorenzo houses.

It is one of the most beautiful tours you can do. It communicates the different regions of the island and it will take you through wonderful landscapes. The most abundant colors here are the yellow of the stunt (native flower) and the green of the pines, which stand out against the gray of the lava. The route takes us up to almost 2,000 meters high.

You can start the route through the municipality of Fuencaliente, the southernmost of La Palma and where more volcanoes are concentrated, such as San Antonio (its last eruption was in 1677) and Teneguía. In addition, you can enjoy the Fuencaliente salt flats that, with their white tones, breaks with the brown and reddish tones of the mountains.

5. Puerto Naos

If you are looking for a good beach where you can lie in the sun and forget about all the problems, there is no better place than Puerto Naos, a beach famous for its black sands. Here you can also go scuba diving or even paragliding flights. It has a good infrastructure that includes a hotel facing the sea, restaurants and terraces.

6. Roque de los Muchachos

Can you imagine being able to touch the sky with your hands? And at the same time receive the freshness of the trade winds? You can do all of this at the top of La Isla de La Palma, and in the Roque de los Muchachos you will be almost 2500 meters above sea level.

You will have the most impressive experience of freedom of your life and you will see the whole island in a different way, including the volcanoes, the beaches, the valley …

Right on “the roof” of the island there is an important astrophysical observatory, which has one of the most complete telescopes in the world. Here the sky is so pure that you can see the stars like nowhere else. Ideal to spend all day (and night) in the area.
