Parga in Greece, picturesque and colorful

To the northwest of Greece and bathed by the Ionian Sea, in whose waters a thousand battles have been fought, we find a picturesque city, Parga. Its location is very close to the mouth of the river Acheron, in front of the tiny island of Paxos, possessing magnificent natural caves, and Antipaxos which, according to legend, was created by Poseidon as a gift for his beloved.

Parga: some history

This city has an impressive historical past and also something bloody. Throughout time, important characters of the most varied and varied have put their feet in it.

The emblem and pride of this town is the castle, located on top of a promontory. From it the views are a delight, since it offers a spectacular panoramic view of the turquoise waters merging with the celestial horizon.

This fortress served as protection against all possible invaders, who used to arrive both by land and by ship, including pirates. Among these, the best known of those who passed through Parga was Barbarossa. According to legend, it completely devastated the city.

However, this was not the only time that the city’s buildings collapsed. This beautiful enclave was attacked by the Ottomans several times, led by the despot and cruel monarch Ali Pasha.

But this is not all in terms of the importance of the place, if we go back further in the past, we will discover that this colony has existed since prehistoric times. Archaeological remains from the Neolithic era and even tombs from the Mycenaean period have been found there. These are just some examples through which the traveler will have the opportunity to know the turbulent roots of this area full of adventures, memories and stories.

Its beaches, bathed in Hellenic charm

Despite its enormous historical value, tourists often flock to Parga for its beautiful, smooth and spectacular beaches, considered to be the best of all the Ionian Islands.

Its most popular shore is located just two kilometers from the center and its name is Valtos. It is located precisely on one of the slopes of the famous castle and is profusely surrounded by greenery.

Another of the most outstanding beaches is Sarakiniko, also at a short distance. However, those who do not want to suffer the hassle of walking can go to Krioneri, very close to the port.

Of course, each and every one of them is perfectly equipped to offer a good rest to bathers. Those who decide to explore the nearby coasts will be captivated by the Mediterranean climate of the region, characterized by the strong sun.

In its cool waters you can practice sports such as sailing, water skiing, scuba diving and snorkelling.

Strolling through its picturesque avenues

Another of the most popular attractions on this island is its beautiful port, due to its peculiar appearance. We should not leave without taking the opportunity to take a walk along the pier and contemplate the many boats anchored in it from there.

If we prefer hiking or walking there are several paths that go up to the highest part of the mountain. Through them we will arrive at various churches such as Santa Elena and Los Apóstoles. Similarly, we will also reach the entrance to the monastery of Panagia Vlahernas.

On the other hand, if we prefer, we can spend the day walking the streets of the city, letting ourselves be intoxicated by the color of the facades of their houses, which have a maximum height of three floors and charming wooden terraces.

When night approaches, having a good grilled fish and savoring a good wine on a terrace watching the sun go down between the island of the Virgin Mary and the castle of Parga is a priceless experience.  

Tourists who spend their holidays here during the month of August will have the opportunity to attend the wonderful Parga Festival, which is held annually in that month.
