A tour of the best beaches in Portugal

The most beachy area in all of Portugal and internationally recognizable is the Algarve, in the south of the country. And of course, many of the beaches that will appear in this list belong to that beautiful region. We are also going to mention other places on the country’s long Atlantic coast, and we will even close with a wonderful beach on the island of Madeira.  There is no denying that  the beaches of Portugal are very, very special.

1. Marinha Beach

Let’s start with the Portuguese beach par excellence, the Marinha beach, which usually appears on the lists of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. A place in the Algarve where bathing is not always easy, given the ocean conditions.

What is guaranteed is that we will take walks among its capricious rocky forms. And if the tide is low, we will walk through its sand and take countless photos of this unique enclave.

2. Ericeira

Another place where it is not always easy to take a dip is on the beaches of Ericeira, now north of Lisbon. If you are a lover of surfing, this place surely sounds like you, since it is one of the best places in the country to practice it.

However, the beach itself is very frequented by families and tourists, who also take the opportunity to discover the beautiful town that still transmits its past as a fishing village.

3. Doña Ana Beach

We return to the Algarve, to one of its great tourist centers, the city of Lagos, where the Doña Ana beach is located. A simply charming place, with steep cliffs surrounding the sandy area. 

This is a space where the oceanic waters of a perfect turquoise color and thick sand converge that none of the people who come to this small cove can forget. It may be crowded in the middle of summer, but it is one of those places that are enjoyed throughout the year.

4. Portinho de Arrábida beach

In the center of the country the beaches of the city of Setúbal are famous. Well, 13 kilometers from this city is the beach of Portinho da Arrábida. Its name refers to the Arrábida Natural Park, where it is located.

If you are looking for a quiet place, this is it. A beach surrounded by pine forests that hide an area of ​​fine white sand and very calm and clean waters. Waters that invite you to practice diving and snorkeling to discover its rich depths.

5. Island of Tavira

Tavira is another well-known town in the Algarve. There you have to go to the so-called island of Tavira. Here a dozen kilometers of incredible beaches await us, where you can even camp. How to get? By ferry from Tavira and it takes about five minutes to get there. This short distance means that here are the quietest beaches in the Algarve.

6. Nazaré

Of all our list with the best beaches in Portugal, those of Nazaré are the northernmost of all. Here there are many places for swimming, sunbathing and practicing various water sports, including surfing. In fact, on the beach of Norte de Nazaré he had the feat of surfing a wave of up to 30 meters, considered by many to be the largest in the world.

7. Porto Santo in Madeira

And as we had advanced, we ended up flying to the tropical archipelago of Madeira, specifically to Porto Santo. There, some dream beaches await us. Who wants to define what turquoise waters are like, here you will find the perfect image.

But in addition to bathing in them, the typical thing is to cover oneself entirely with the fine sands of the beach,  since they are sands rich in therapeutic properties thanks to their mineral content. An experience that we should all try at least once in life.
