Las Tetas de Viana are 2 twin mountains in the form of witness hills located in the province of Guadalajara, specifically in the region of La Alcarria. Its picturesque appearance, as well as its scenic surroundings, were declared a Natural Monument by the Junta de Communities de Castilla-La Mancha in 2006.

How were these flat-topped hills formed? What tourist options can be carried out in your environment? We tell you all this and more below.

The Tits of Viana, a little known place

The popular saying of this area says: ” Viana’s boobs, many see them, but few suck them .” The first part of the saying is a very clear reference to the visual impact generated in this beautiful region by these 2 eroded limestone rock grinding wheels. This is partly because they can be seen from several miles around.

“Few las sumaman” means that very few are those who have climbed and have been able to enjoy from the top of the panoramic view offered by their view over the entire region.

Geographically speaking, the Viana Tits are 2 molars – flat-topped hills – of karst lithology eroded by boulevards that arise around them and by the Tagus and Solana rivers.

These hills belong to the Spanish Iberian mountain range. They are made up of a more eroded clay body and 2 limestone rock peaks between 20 and 30 meters thick that make them practically inaccessible, due to the verticality of their wall.

So only you can access the southernmost through iron stairs that replaced some old stone that served as access to the watchtower that crowned.

The Tits of Viana stand out for the uniqueness and representativeness of their geological and geomorphological values in the La Alcarria region. This beautiful place covers an area of 115.63 hectares and is characterized by the majesty of these twin witness hills, which have a height of 1,145 meters and are the highest point in the region.

In addition, this uniqueness has also motivated the inclusion of the area within the Natura 2000 Network as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).

Within the fauna community, the colonies of rock and jackdaws located in the limestone escarpments stand out, as well as the presence of the golden eagle and griffon vulture, both included in the Regional Catalog of threatened species.

Route to the Tits of Viana

We can access the Tits from several places. There is a path that leaves the municipality of Trillo  and, after walking through scrubland for about 12 kilometers, it leaves us in the same canyon that divides the twin mountains.

As we get closer, the Tits turn into steep and very steep mountains, which acquire their own personality. The one on the left, the only one accessible without climbing gear, is uneven and rough.

On the other hand, his sister, who will appear 500 meters later on our right, is a knife-cut cliff with a rectilinear horizon. Between the two is a hill that some use as occasional parking.

To the left is the path, with its respective indications. This leads us through an oak grove dotted on the very foot of the rock, which we will go around until we find the only access road.

After this route, we will climb without too much difficulty up a rock staircase that will take us almost to the end of the cut, where we will run into another, this time made of wrought iron, which leads us to the top.

Once at the top, we will find a natural meadow where silence reigns and where, without a doubt, we will witness the grandeur of these geomorphological formations. From here, we will dominate a good part of this beautiful and heterogeneous Iberian region.

A place we must go

La Alcarria is a beautiful country that people don’t want to go to .” With this phrase, Camilo José Cela referred to the land he traveled to write his first travel book in 1946.

By reading the Journey to La Alcarria, Cela wants to convey to the reader the sensations that the traveler experiences on the road, such as the smells, the colors of the landscapes, the sounds that nature offers …

Without a doubt, plunging into its pages is one of the best ways to get to know this beautiful region of Guadalajara. Even so, we recommend that you check it out with your own senses. We assure you that the trip to La Alcarria, where the majestic Las Tetas de Viana rise, will not disappoint you.
