Salvador Dalí And The Museums Of His Work In Spain
To speak of Salvador Dalí is to make him a master of surrealism. Without a doubt, he was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. There are a number of places that are worth visiting to get closer to the figure of this great painter and a good part of his work.
Spain has been fortunate to be the birthplace of renowned artists, who have left their heritage scattered throughout their territory. Among the geniuses there is one who stands out in a special way: Salvador Dalí.
It is possible to travel to Figueres, Dalí’s native town. Or to other towns whose seascapes served so much to inspire many of his works. There you will see where all that imagination that flowed through the artist came from.
Salvador Dalí and the Costa Brava
In this area of Catalonia, visitors who adore surrealism have three museums related to Dalí. Obviously, they all stray completely from conventional museums. The visit is most suggestive to immerse yourself in the world of the artist himself.
And we are not talking about isolated works without connection, everything is a great artistic ensemble. We refer, then, to architectural spaces and surreal assemblages that will not leave you indifferent.
The city of Figueres stands out, where Dalí was born and died, which is often surprising. In it we can enjoy the Dalí Museum-Theater, which houses more than 1,500 works. We can see famous pieces such as Galatea de las spheres , Port Alguer or the rainy Cadillac . To these are added fascinating optical montages, holograms or stereoscopies.
If you want to know a more private side of the artist, you can visit the Gala Dalí Castle House-Museum. It is a medieval castle in Púbol where it is possible to discover the paintings and drawings that Dalí himself gave to Gala.
An aura of mystery runs through the rooms designed and decorated by Dalí’s hand. You can see elephant sculptures adorning the garden, a swimming pool surrounded by Wagner busts or the dresses designed for Gala by this genius named Dalí.
Other places of interest that bring the artist closer
It is also interesting that it was a refuge for Gala and Dalí for years. Thus, you can visit the Salvador Dalí House-Museum in Portlligat, a good way to surround yourself with the scenes of the great Catalan artist. Many of his best works started from the visualization of the fishermen’s houses. You can visit his workshop, library and private rooms.
Dalí’s heritage is certainly rich and it has the most varied centers and museums. Some also prominent in Catalonia are the Perrot-Moore Art Center in Cadaqués, the Montserrat Museum or the Maresme Regional Museum.
Salvador Dalí in the rest of Spain
Salvador Dalí has contributed his talent to world culture and art, something that we can see in other collections in Spanish museums. They are a series of works that make very clear the various creative stages that the Girona artist had.
It is possible to see his work both in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and in the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza. Two of the vertices of the so – called Madrid Art Triangle, which completes the Prado Museum.
These museums display key works in Dalí’s iconography. We cannot forget to quote Girl at the Window or Dream caused by the flight of a bee around a pomegranate a second before waking up . You can also see his works at the Museu d´Art Espanyol Contemporani-Fundación Juan March, in Palma de Mallorca.
All this means that for those who like the work of Salvador Dalí, or simply want to see some of his most outstanding creations, Spain is the perfect place to learn about or delve into the art of this great genius. We could say that he is the most universal Catalan in the history of culture.
