The origin of Ich Ha Lol Xaan

Hampolol, which means ‘quickly burnished flower’, is one of the most important natural reserves in the state of Yucatán, in Mexico. This colony, which suffered for several years attacks caused by the pirates of the time – specifically in 1685 – is now maintained as a protected area.

The purpose of creating this protected area is to conserve the native fauna of its mangroves and springs. Hampolol is also curious about the influence of the volume of water collected at different times of the year, from the monsoon to the rising sea. For this reason, experts classify three types of ecosystems within the zone: low forest, middle forest and tropical savanna.

It is right here, inside one of the middle forests, that Ich Ha Lol Xaan or ‘Flower of huano in the water’ is found. This natural outcropping of water on limestone also shares its space with a tributary called Río Verde.

This river flows into the sea and thus forms two salt water marshes that are in perfect condition and that offer shelter to the rich biodiversity of the area.
