The capital of Sweden is known worldwide for its beauty, its many parks and its buildings, with wonderful architecture. We want to take a walk through its streets and its canals to show you the essential places to see in Stockholm.
Places to see in Stockholm
Stockholm was founded in 1252. At first it was just a small town whose aim was to protect Sweden from foreign invasions. We would have to wait until 1419 to see the city turned into a capital. Much later, in 2010, it was distinguished as a European Green Capital. These are the things to see in Stockholm:
1. Royal Palace
Here is the residence of the King of Sweden and, of course, it has a strategic location by the sea (designed to spot possible attacks). It is one of the largest palaces in all of Europe and its interior includes the Hall of Treasures and the Armory.
The changing of the guard takes place every noon, so at least come around at that time to admire the exterior of the palace.
2. Gamla Stan
It is the place where the city was founded, the old town and most emblematic area of Stockholm. The streets are paved in stone and form a perfect grid. It houses a good number of shops, churches and buildings that were erected between the 18th and 19th centuries.
Gamla Stan’s must-sees include Stortoget Square with its two famous houses, one yellow and the other red, as well as the Museum dedicated to the Nobel Laureates. Get lost in its streets, have a hot chocolate with a piece of cake and enjoy your walk through this historic place.
3. Skansen
It is the oldest open-air museum in the world (it was founded in 1891) and is ideal for those who prefer outdoor activities. Plus, it gives you great views and is a good way to learn about Swedish history.
Skansen is located on the island of Djurgarden and recreates original houses and farms from different parts of the country. Cultural and traditional events are organized every month. The Christmas market is one of the most beautiful on the continent.
4. Municipal Library
It was opened to the public in 1928 and it will blow your mind. The Stockholm Public Library has a circular internal structure that seems to emulate the human mind. It doesn’t matter if you don’t intend to borrow one of the thousands of books it houses… at least come closer to see this jewel of Swedish architecture.
5. Tunnelbana
Stockholm metro stations are also works of art (for those who prefer closed spaces). They are, without a doubt, the most beautiful underground galleries that exist.
The network of this transport reaches 110 kilometers in length and in some of its stops we can see really incredible images. Some look like caves, another is illuminated with neon lights, one is full of graffiti, and many are carefully decorated with a variety of motifs.
6. Town Hall
Another thing to see in Stockholm. For its construction it is said that no less than 8 million red bricks were used. It was inaugurated in 1923 and on this site the Nobel Prizes are awarded every December 10. The famous banquet is held in the Blue Room and the Golden Room celebrates the feast with the world’s brightest minds.
At other times of the year you can visit without restrictions. The Town Hall overlooks Lake Malaren and a 106 meter high tower from which you can enjoy wonderful views of the city.
7. Vasa Museum
Whether you like boats or not, this is one of the must-sees in the Swedish capital. It houses nothing less than the only warship from the 17th century that has been fully preserved. Seeing it live and direct is an unforgettable experience.
The ship was shipwrecked in 1628, but it was refloated, restored and repaired. You can even walk among the wood carvings that decorate it!
Other things to see in Stockholm are the Modern Museum or the Fotografiska (photography museum). And very curious are the Junibacken Museum (recreation of the fantasy worlds of Pippi Longstocking) and the ABBA Museum (the famous Swedish group of the 70s).
